Kiza 跪座

Kiza 跪座 means kneeling posture and refers to a kneeling position in which the toes are flexed under so that the balls of the feet remain on the floor. Unlike ordinary seiza, in which the tops of the feet lie flat, kiza keeps the feet engaged and allows the practitioner to rise or move more readily. In some martial arts, this position is described as having “live feet” or “live toes,” while the relaxed foot position of seiza is referred to as “dead feet” or “dead toes.”
